An Empire clock in chased and gilt bronze, depicting "The education of Alexander the Great" Alexander is depicted as a young man wearing a draped toga, seated on a curule chair and holding a tablet. The dial, with its white enamelled circle, and the movement are set into the base of the chair. The rectangular base features a lively frieze. Before inheriting the throne of Macedon, Alexander the Great was educated by his tutor Aristotle, who fostered his interest in science, philosophy and culture. From an early age, he was noted for his wisdom and extraordinary abilities, most famously demonstrated by taming the fierce horse Bucephalus. Ascending the throne at the age of twenty, he led the Macedonian cavalry from Bucephalus's back, achieving victories across Persia, Egypt and as far as India. In little more than a decade, he built a vast empire whose unity encouraged exchanges between Eastern and Western cultures. He died suddenly at the age of thirty-two, yet remains one of history's greatest conquerors and a lasting model of courage, ambition and military genius since the 4th century BC.
