Description
49. A gilt-bronze mantel clock with a crouching Aphrodite in patinated bronze, first half of the 19th century The dial and movement are set within a frame decorated with palmette and scroll motifs; it is surmounted by a brown-patinated figure depicting 'Aphrodite at her bath', inspired by the ancient bronze attributed to Doidalsas of Bithynia; rectangular base. (oxidation, missing parts, wear and tear, no keys, no balance wheels, no guarantee of working order), 23cm wide, 17.5cm deep, 53cm high (9in wide, 6 1/2in deep, 20 1/2in high). Born from the sea foam, Aphrodite is the goddess of fertility, celestial love and physical desire. As the embodiment of beauty, she has been a constant source of inspiration for artists. Associated with numerous mythological episodes, she may appear alone or alongside other figures, particularly her son Eros, or within scenes of seduction. Sometimes draped in garments that reveal more than they conceal, she is often shown fully or partially nude. Her attributes are drawn from the animal kingdom (swan, dove, turtledove, ram), the plant world (myrtle, pomegranate, apple), and from the earth and sea, notably shells.
