A mantel clock in gilt-bronze and patinated bronze surmounted by Ajax bust, first half of the 19th century Rectangular shape, the dial signed '... à Marseille', and the movement are set within a case adorned with rosettes, inverted lyres and palmettes. (One hand is missing; no key; no balance wheel; slight oxidation, no guarantee of working order), 16.5cm wide, 9.5cm deep, 46cm high (6in wide, 3 1/2in deep, 18in high). A hero of the Trojan War, Ajax was renowned for his exceptional strength and courage. Regarded as one of the bravest of the Greek warriors, he symbolizes heroic valour and military honour.
