76. A late 18th century gilt-bronze clock depicting a bacchanal carried by winged putti
The winged puttis seated on goats support the bacchante reclining on a barrel. This barrel features a white enamelled dial with Arabic numerals for the hours, adorned with garlands of vine leaves. They rest on a rectangular base with rounded sides and ornate friezes. (scratches, wear and tear, missing parts, slight oxidation, no balance wheel, no key, movement requires servicing), 40cm wide, 15cm deep, 48cm high (15 1/2in wide, 5 1/2in deep, 18 1/2in high).
Religious celebrations dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine, ecstasy and joy, the Dionysia, known as Bacchanalia in the Roman world, combined dancing, music, abundance and sensual freedom. Led by the god's female worshippers, called Maenads by the Greeks and Bacchantes by the Romans, these celebrations took place both in nature and within the city and fulfilled an important civic function. They also provided artists with a subject rich in movement and imagination.
