81. A large mantel clock in gilt-bronze, first half of the 19th century The bezel is decorated with friezes of pearls, water leaves and ovals; the guilloché-decorated dial features Roman numerals painted in black; the front is decorated with a painting of nymphs dancing to the sound of a flute; rectangular base. (slight oxidation, minor losses to the painted decoration, no key, no balance wheel, movement requires servicing), 20cm wide, 11cm deep, 39.5cm high (7 1/2in wide, 4in deep, 15 1/2in high). Female divinities embodying the various elements of nature, nymphs inhabit woodlands, mountains, springs and rivers. Celebrated for their beauty, they are benevolent deities associated with youth and particularly with the protection of young women.
