An important centerpiece in brown-patinated and gilt-bronze, early 19th century The bowl, decorated with a frieze of water leaves, is supported by a fluted column encircled by five figures of Poseidon accented with rosettes, quadrangular white marble base with canted corners, pierced sides and a bead-and-reel frieze (minor wear to the patina, some chips to the marble) 35cm in diameter, 35.5cm high (13 1/2in in diameter, 13 1/2in high). Brother of Zeus and Hades, Poseidon is the god of the sea, the oceans and earthquakes. Master of the waters, he is generally represented holding a trident and accompanied by marine creatures or horses, of which he is also the patron. A powerful and sometimes formidable figure, he embodies both the destructive force and the wealth of the maritime world.
