Description
83. A mantel clock in gilt-bronze by Thomire & Cie, first half of the 19th century
The dial set within the upper section, with black Roman numerals for the hours, surrounded by a frieze of water leaves and vine scrolls, the body features the figure of Chronos framed by two pilasters with Corinthian capitals, signed Thomire & Cie on the dial. (minor wear to the gilding, lacking the rear bezel, pendulum and key), 13.5cm wide, 9cm deep, 28.5cm high (5in wide, 3 1/2in deep, 11in high).
In classical iconography, Chronos personifies Time. Often depicted as a winged old man carrying a scythe, he serves as a reminder of the inexorable passage of years and the fragility of human existence.
