89. An important Louis XV-style wall cartel clock in gilt-bronze depicting the Fables de La Fontaine
'Le Coq et le Renard'. With its intricate design, it features a rich rocaille decoration of foliage and interlacing patterns; the dial has white and blue enamelled cartouches with Roman numerals for the hours. (oxidation, one cartouche missing, some parts need reattaching, no key, no balance wheel, movement requires servicing), 41cm wide, 13cm deep, 80cm high (16in wide, 5in deep, 31in high).
For many of his fables, Jean de La Fontaine drew directly upon the repertoire of the ancient author Aesop. The scene represented here is The Cock and the Fox, a reworking of Aesop's The Dog, the Cock and the Fox. The fable contrasts the fox's cunning with the cock's vigilance, as the latter uses his intelligence to outwit his predator. Both authors share a mastery of vivid storytelling and subtly effective moral lessons.
