Description
96. A gilt-bronze clock depicting Eros, first half of the 19th century
The movement and the white enamelled dial with black Roman and Arabic numerals are inscribed in the central pillar, framed by a winged Eros holding a rose and an arrow, placing its arch on the base and reading it; rectangular base with frieze of inflamed cups and small leafy feet. (slight wear on the gilding, slight signs of oxidation, the rear window is missing, no key, no balance), 35.5cm wide, 12.5cm deep, 50cm high (13 1/2in wide, 4 1/2in deep, 19 1/2in high).
Son of Aphrodite, Eros is the god of love and desire. Armed with his bow and arrows, he kindles passion among both gods and mortals. He is one of the most enduring and popular figures in Western iconography.
