98. A pair of 19th century composite candelabra in patinated and gilt-bronze, England, Regency period
The central four-light chandelier rests on a truncated conical base decorated with depictions of muses. (slight oxidation, a few chips, mounting system in need of attention), 32cm wide, 32cm deep, 62cm high (12 1/2in wide, 12 1/2in deep, 24in high).
The nine Muses are the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. Patrons of the arts, literature and sciences, they inspire poets, musicians and scholars, and are closely associated with Apollo, with whom they are often depicted in procession. Each presides over a particular discipline.
