Description
102. A late 18th century vase-shaped clock with satyr-head handles in gilt-bronze, the dial signed Julien Leroy, model of Robert Osmond
Companions of Dionysus, satyrs accompany the Maenads in processions celebrating the god. Intended as guardians of flocks and the countryside, they are nevertheless portrayed as carefree beings who drink, seduce and amuse themselves, evoking the freedom and fertility of nature and embodying instinct. They are represented as hybrid creatures, half-man and half-goat.
