A pair of gilt-bronze candlesticks with winged Victory decoration, 19th century Démi sphere and black marble base (wear to the gilding and shine at the bases), 8.5cm wide, 10cm deep, 26cm high (3in wide, 3 1/2in deep, 10in high). The personification of military or moral victory, and a highly popular decorative motif, Victory corresponds to the Greek goddess Nike. Depicted with wings, she bestows crowns and palms upon triumphant heroes.
