Two pairs of candlesticks, one in gilt-bronze in the form of a siren, first half of the 19th century, and the other with fluted truncated shafts in gilt and patinated bronze, 19th century One pair features a fluted design, whilst the other depicts a mermaid seated on a truncated column. (One candlestick base is missing; oxidation; signs of wear; H. 25 cm (9 1/2 in.) - H. 21 cm (8 in.) Renowned for their irresistible song, Sirens lure sailors to their doom. They symbolize seduction, danger and the temptations encountered along life's journey. Long regarded as hybrid marine creatures, the study of ancient texts and imagery has revealed that they were in fact believed to be women with the bodies of birds, closer in appearance to harpies than to the mermaid-like beings of later tradition.
