Description
114. A pair of two-light candelabra in gilt and patinated bronze, first half of the 19th century They are supported by a winged Victory adorned with a ribbon-tied wreath; the base takes the form of a truncated column surmounted by a half-sphere and terminating in a quadrangular plinth (minor wear to the gilding, one nozzle needs reattaching, one drip pan replaced), 17cm wide, 8cm deep, 37.5cm high (6 1/2in wide, 3in deep, 14 1/2in high). The personification of military or moral victory, and a highly popular decorative motif, Victory corresponds to the Greek goddess Nike. Depicted with wings, she bestows crowns and palms upon triumphant heroes.
