A gilt-bronze clock depicting Hercacles, first half of the 19th century It is depicted holding its club and leaning against a truncated tree trunk, within which the dial and movement are set; it has a rectangular base with claw-shaped feet. (oxidised hands, no keys, no balance wheel, movement in need of servicing), 27.5cm wide, 11cm deep, 38.5cm high (10 1/2in wide, 4in deep, 15in high). Born from the union of Zeus and a mortal woman, making him a demigod, Heracles is undoubtedly the most celebrated of Greek heroes. His twelve labours bear witness to superhuman strength placed in the service of courage and perseverance. Identifiable by numerous attributes linked to his exploits, he is most often recognised by the skin of the Nemean Lion draped over his shoulders and by his club. Though Hera, jealous of Zeus's infidelity, relentlessly persecuted him, Heracles was admitted to Olympus after his death and granted immortality.
