148. Psyche and Cupid in gilt-bronze, first half of the 19th century Siena yellow marble plinth with applied foliage garland decoration, small feet. (oxidation), 23.5cm wide, 11cm deep, 39cm high (9in wide, 4in deep, 15in high). Sent by Aphrodite to punish the exceptionally beautiful Psyche, Eros instead falls in love with her. Assisted by Zephyrus, the god of the winds, he secretly installs her in a magnificent palace, visiting her each night on the condition that he never reveal himself. Influenced by her jealous sisters, who convince her that her mysterious lover is a monster, Psyche resolves to kill him. Illuminating his face with a lamp, she discovers his beauty but accidentally lets fall a drop of oil. Eros awakens and the promise is broken. Numerous trials follow, involving the intervention of several gods, including Zeus, ultimately resulting in the lovers' eternal union and Psyche's immortality. This myth symbolizes rebirth and the enduring power of love, both the driving force behind and the reward for every trial.
