An pair of three-light candelabra in gilt and patinated bronze supported by a Vestal, Empire period The vestal virgin stands on a rectangular plinth decorated with a depiction of Athena holding a torch. (slight oxidation), 24cm wide, 10cm deep, 51cm high (9in wide, 3 1/2in deep, 20in high). Priestesses of Vesta in ancient Rome, the Vestals were entrusted with maintaining the sacred fire of the city. They enjoyed exceptional prestige and symbolized purity and the continuity of the state. In ancient Greece, the equivalent deity was Hestia. Unfortunately, her cult is less well documented and consequently less well known than that of her Roman counterpart.
