182. A gilt and patinated bronze clock depicting Atlas supporting the movement, first half of the 19th century
The white enamelled dial, featuring Roman numerals for the hours, is set into the sphere supported by the figure of Atlas; rectangular base. (oxidation, minor imperfections to the dial's enamel, no key, no balance wheel, movement requires servicing), 13cm wide, 13cm deep, 37.5cm high (5in wide, 5in deep, 14 1/2in high).
A Titan condemned by Zeus after the war against the Olympian gods, Atlas is forever tasked with bearing the vault of heaven upon his shoulders. He has become a symbol of strength, endurance and the burden of fate.
