Description
199. A mantel clock surmounted by the bust of the Apollo Belvedere in gilt-bronze, first half of the 19th century
The dial, featuring an enamelled circle with Roman numerals for the hours, is framed by friezes of ovals and foliage; it has a rectangular base and small feet. (oxidation, wear to the gilding, one foot damaged, movement oxidised, no keys, no pendulum), 20cm wide, 11cm deep, 47cm high (7 1/2in wide, 4in deep, 18 1/2in high).
The Apollo Belvedere, a celebrated ancient sculpture preserved in the Vatican, was long regarded as the embodiment of ideal beauty. The work exerted a profound influence on classical and neoclassical aesthetics.
