A mantel clock surmounted by the bust of the Apollo Belvedere in gilt-bronze, first half of the 19th century The dial, featuring an enamelled circle with Roman numerals for the hours, is framed by frieze of foliage; it has a rectangular base and small feet. (oxidation, wear to the gilding, no keys, no pendulum), 13cm wide, 22cm deep, 45cm high (5in wide, 8 1/2in deep, 17 1/2in high). The Apollo Belvedere, a celebrated ancient sculpture preserved in the Vatican, was long regarded as the embodiment of ideal beauty. The work exerted a profound influence on classical and neoclassical aesthetics.
