221. A pair of four-light candelabra mid-19th century The four rocaille-style sconces, adorned with foliage, are supported by a young satyr and a young Dionysus. The base features a truncated column adorned with garlands of flowers. (perforated elements, oxidation), 28cm wide, 22cm deep, 53cm high (11in wide, 8 1/2in deep, 20 1/2in high). (2) Companions of Dionysus, satyrs accompany the Maenads in processions celebrating the god. Intended as guardians of flocks and the countryside, they are nevertheless portrayed as carefree beings who drink, seduce and amuse themselves, evoking the freedom and fertility of nature and embodying instinct. They are represented as hybrid creatures, half-man and half-goat.
