Description
After François-Marie SUZANNE (1750–1802).
A pair of patinated and chiselled bronze statuettes depicting Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU and François-Marie Arouet, known as VOLTAIRE, shown standing on Aleppo breccia marble plinths, set upon chiselled bronze plinths, gilded with stylised acanthus leaves (damage, losses, chips; the walking stick is missing and needs reattaching).
First half of the 19th century.
Total height: 44 cm and 46 cm
Active in Paris during the second half of the 18th century and a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc, SUZANNE presented plaster figures of the two philosophers, as well as the Comte de Mirabeau, to the Revolutionary Parliament in 1792. The Taylor Institution in Oxford holds a similar example of Voltaire, whilst the Louvre holds one example of each of the philosophers (OA 5298 and 5297).
