Trained by his uncle, a sign painter and portraitist, Donatien Nonnotte became, from 1728, the chief painter to King François Lemoyne and assisted him in the creation of the décor at Versailles. After being admitted to the Academy in 1741, he moved to Lyon and was appointed official painter to the city in 1762. A portraitist of high society, his works are distinguished by the particular attention paid to fabrics and finery.
