Description
Francisque-Joseph DURET (1804–1865). Young fisherman dancing the tarantella (souvenir of Naples). Bronze sculpture with a brown patina, signed ‘Duret F.’ around the base and ‘QUESNEL fondeur’ on the plinth (a crack on one arm, distortion at the plinth). Circa 1840. Height: 43 cm This model, created in 1832 and exhibited at the 1833 Salon, was a great success; it was acquired by the Ministry of the King’s Household, and the copy in its collection is now held at the Louvre (LP62), cast by Eugène GONON. Its counterpart, the Neapolitan dancer with a tambourine, was exhibited at the 1838 Salon. A pupil of Bosio, Francisque Duret, the son of a sculptor, won the Prix de Rome in 1823. The customs and traditions he encountered during his stay in Italy would serve as a source of inspiration throughout his career. Bibliography: Pierre KJELLBERG, *Les bronzes du XIXe siècle*, Editions de l’amateur, 1987, model reproduced on page 305. Lot from a voluntary sale.
