Description
Henry SIMON (1910–1987). Fish market scene. Oil on canvas, signed lower right; bears an exhibition label on the reverse from 2003 in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. Height: 81 cm – Width: 100 cm Born in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, Henry Simon trained at the Écoles des Beaux-Arts in Nantes and Paris, where he studied under Émile and Lucien SIMON. As a member of the Saint-Jean-de-Monts group alongside Jean Launois, he is regarded as one of the first modern painters of the Vendée, alongside Charles Milcendeau. His work depicts everyday life through a regionalist lens with an almost ethnographic focus. His paintings document the customs and traditions of market gardeners before they disappeared. Lot from a private sale.
