Appraisal carried out by Cabinet Lacroix-Jeannest.
Demeter Chiparus, originally from Romania, was a student in Florence when he arrived in Paris in 1912 and became a pupil of Antonin Mercié and Jean Boucher. The discovery of the treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb introduced him to chryselephantine sculpture, a combination of gold and ivory. He made this technique his own, modernising it and adapting it to the artistic style of the Roaring Twenties, thereby making it his trademark.
