Description
French school, c. 1679. Allegory of the Peace of Nijmegen: the glory of Louis XIV with the Renown figures, Hercules slaying the Nemean Lion and the Lernaean Hydra, with Abundance and Peace. Original canvas (with damage, lifting and previous restorations) dated ‘1679’ at the top. Height: 69.5 cm – Width: 66 cm Appraisal carried out by the TURQUIN firm. The Treaties of Nijmegen (1678–1679) brought to an end the Dutch War, which had begun in 1672 and was waged by Louis XIV against the United Provinces, joined by Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. This peace marked the zenith of the king’s reign, and he became known as Louis the Great. The Court and the royal propaganda apparatus immediately capitalised on the event to cultivate the image of a king who was as much a peacemaker as a conqueror. There are numerous examples of this, such as the painting *Louis XIV Resting in the Bosom of Glory after the Peace of Nijmegen* by Antoine COYPEL, held at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. Our painting forms part of this trend towards the deification of the monarch. Lot from a voluntary sale.
