Description
Pierre GUARICHE (1926–1995). CA21 coffee table, known as ‘Aquilon’. Wood, melamine and glass; design created in 1965 (slight signs of wear). Height: 36 cm – Width: 70 cm – Depth: 70 cm This table is featured in the book *Pierre GUARICHE* by Delphine JACOB, Lionel BLAISSE and Aurélien JEAUNEAU, published by NORMA, on pages 158 and 159. The CA21 coffee table, known as the ‘Aquilon’, is a creation by Pierre GUARICHE, a leading figure in French design of the 1950s and 1960s. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Guariche played a part in the revival of furniture design after the Second World War by exploring clean lines and modern forms, combining wood, melamine and metal in a quest for simplicity and functionality. The Aquilon model, designed around 1965, is characterised by its square shape and raised tabletop resting on a lightweight frame, which follows in the tradition of other post-war French design creations, such as Charlotte PERRIAND’s tubular furniture, Jean PROUVÉ’s tables and chairs, and Michel MORTIER’s wood and metal furniture, all of which share the same interest in industrial production, simple lines and the incorporation of innovative materials. Lot from a private sale.
