Description
JOLY Foundry. Portrait of René-Théophile Laennec (1781–1826). Bust in bronze with a brown-green patina, marked on the reverse, mounted on a corner pedestal in oak. Foundry’s signature on the back. Total height: 90 cm – Height of bust: 58 cm – Height of plinth: 32 cm The physician René-Théophile Laennec is notably credited with inventing auscultation and coining the term ‘stethoscope’. Another cast of this bust stands in front of the Faculty of Medicine in Nantes, a town near which the hospital bearing his name (Saint-Herblain) is also situated. Lot from a voluntary sale.
