Description
Mathurin MEHEUT (1882–1958).
Scene of a farmyard with hens, a turkey, rabbits, a peacock and kids.

Height: 54 cm – Width: 81 cm
Many of Maturin Méheut’s works centred on nature and animals. In particular, he studied the marine environment at the Roscoff Biological Station in 1910. In 1911, his *Etude d’animaux* was published, characterised by a highly detailed, almost scientific approach. He continued his artistic exploration with more stylised representations, in which the line became almost secondary to the final composition.
This farmyard scene forms part of this quest for expressiveness, marked here by the almost geometric nature of the lines and reinforced by the intensity of the brushstrokes of colour.
Although he lived in Paris for several years, Méheut was born in Lamballe, in Brittany. From the age of 14, he worked for a local painter-craftsman in Lamballe, in a region whose rural character undoubtedly inspired the theme of this painting.
He also travelled to Japan from 22 April 1914. Deeply inspired by what he observed there, Méheut brought back, in particular, a monogram of which there are numerous variations. Initially intertwined, the two ‘M’s of his initials came to be definitively superimposed from 1920 onwards, forming sharp angles reminiscent of mountain peaks or ocean waves. This version of the monogram is affixed here in the bottom right-hand corner of the painting
