Major-General Dessolle* ‘I wish to inform you that the Emperor has just ordered the formation of a Central Army, which is placed under the direct command of a Catholic whose Chief of Staff is General Belliard, Governor of Madrid’. *Jean Joseph Paul Auguste Dessolle (1792–1828), Chief of Staff to General Moreau; fell out of favour with Napoleon in 1804, rallied to Louis XVIII in 1814 and went on to become a Marshal, a Minister and a Peer of France. ‘The Emperor hereby places you in command of the 1st Division of this army (…)’, signed ‘The Prince of Wagram and Neufchâtel, Major-General Berthier’. 2pp. Fine copy.
