Description
Victor-Nicolas FONVILLE (1805–1856). Mountain landscapes with walkers. Pair of gouaches, signed lower right (the glass of one is cracked). Presented in their original frames imitating tree branches in the Black Forest style. Annotations on the reverse. Dimensions (viewing area): Height: 13 cm – Width: 10 cm Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon under Antoine Duclaux and Augustin Thierriat, he spent time in Rome in the 1830s. A pioneer of plein air painting, he opened a school and a studio in 1831 in his hometown of Lyon before moving to Paris around 1833. Provenance: CHENU-SCRIVE auction on 27 October 1987. Lot from a voluntary sale.
