Description
Based on the ancient original, by Auguste DELAFONTAINE (1813–1892). Diana of Gabies. Bronze with a green-brown patina, bearing the mark ‘AD’ surmounted by a star (slight wear and rubbing on the hand). Height: 57 cm The Diana of Gabii most likely depicts the goddess Artemis and is traditionally attributed to Praxiteles. It was discovered by the Scottish archaeologist Gavin HAMILTON in 1792 on the estate of Prince Borghese in Gabies, not far from Rome, and has been housed in the Louvre since 1920. This version of the classic model, which enjoyed great success, was recreated by the French sculptor Charles-Gabriel SAUVAGE (1741–1824). Lot from a voluntary sale.
