Description
Edward Francis CUNNINGHAM (c. 1742?–1795), known as Francesco CALZA. Portrait of Georgelina Lennox (1723–1774), daughter of the Duke of Richmond and wife of Henry Fox Pastel. Height: 60 cm – Width: 48.8 cm On the reverse, a lengthy inscription in French written in 1845 by a descendant with links to the Lennox family, possibly based on earlier inscriptions written by a family member, and noting a donation in 1784. Provenance: Donated, together with the other two pastels, by Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, to Guillaume-Alexandre Pigault in 1784, in gratitude for the latter having secured for the Duke of retain free possession of the estate of Aubigny and authorisation to bear the title of Duke of Aubigny in France, despite the conflict between England and France arising from the War of Independence in the United States. Remained in the family. Our subject was painted by Joshua Reynolds in 1757–1758 (see David Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds. A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, New Haven and London, Yale University Press, 2000, no. 670) and by Allan Ramsay in 1766 (private collections). Georgiana Caroline Lennox, known as Caroline, Lady Holland, was the eldest daughter of Charles, 2nd Duke of Richmond. On 2 May 1744, she married (as his second wife) Henry Fox and, on 6 May 1762, became the 1st Baroness Holland of Holland. She was the mother of Charles James Fox, Leader of the House of Commons, a member of the Whig Party.
