Nicknamed the ‘Empress of Roses’ by Robert de Montesquiou and Alexandre Dumas the Younger, Madeleine Lemaire is particularly famous for her floral still lifes and her portraits of high society. She also inspired Marcel Proust (whose very first book, *Les Plaisirs et les Jours*, she illustrated) to create the character of Madame Verdurin in *In Search of Lost Time*. The Musée d’Orsay holds some of her works.
