Appraisal carried out by the TURQUIN firm.
Family tradition holds that this portrait is that of Jeanne-Anne Adèle Berault de Boisgirault, Countess of Vaudreuil.
A pupil of Jacques Louis David, he won the Prix de Rome in 1810 for his painting ‘The Wrath of Achilles’. On his return from the Villa Medici, he exhibited at the Salon and undertook public commissions such as the ceiling of the Hall of Illustrious Men at the Louvre and the Museum of French History at the Palace of Versailles. In 1837, he was admitted to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Although classified as a history painter, Drölling devoted himself to portraiture from the outset of his training, which enabled him to finance a longer stay in Rome. It was a field in which he once again excelled; in 2025, the Louvre acquired one of his paintings, the portrait of Caroline Hayard.
