Louis-Guillaume GROOTAERS (1816–1882).
Bust of a man and bust of a woman wearing a comb.
Two sculpted portraits on a plinth in grey-green patinated plaster, signed and dated 1848 (damage and missing parts).
Height: 45 and 48 cm
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Grootaers was awarded the Second Prix de Rome. Following this, he joined his father’s studio in his hometown of Nantes. A leading figure in Nantes’s monumental sculpture scene, he created, alongside Debay Jr., the medallions depicting regional celebrities on the Passage Pommeraye and, in collaboration with Daniel Ducommun, worked on the fountain in Place Royale. The Nantes Museum of Fine Arts holds several marble busts, including that of General de Bréa and a terracotta figure of Descartes.
