Description
Ferdinand ROYBET (1840–1920) after Paul DELAROCHE (1797–1856). Study of four men viewed from the front, based on the assassination of the Duke of Guise. Drawing enhanced with red chalk and white gouache, signed lower right (age spots, sun damage, soiling and small losses). Mounted on paper. Height: 21.5 cm – Width: 17.5 cm A native of Uzès, Ferdinand Roybet was a man of his time and specialised from an early age in historicist painting, primarily of the Renaissance, a style then favoured by the eclecticism of the second half of the 19th century. Thus, in 1866, Princess Mathilde Bonaparte’s acquisition of his painting *Fou sous Henri III* secured his reputation. In 1871, he stayed in Holland and refined his technique by producing copies after the great masters, such as Rubens and Hals. His passion for history is evident in his studio, where he collected numerous objects and paintings from the High Middle Ages. As this composition illustrates, Roybet also acknowledged the great masters of his own time, such as Paul DELAROCHE, a specialist in history painting. Our scene is taken from the painting *The Assassination of the Duke of Guise*, commissioned by Ferdinand-Philippe d’Orléans in 1834 and now in the Musée Condé, Chantilly. Lot from a voluntary sale.
