Neapolitan dancer with a tambourine.
Bronze sculpture with a brown patina, signed ‘Duret F’ and ‘Quesnel fondeur’ (minor damage; tambourine missing; crack on one arm).
Circa 1840.
Height: 43 cm
A companion piece to *The Young Fisherman Dancing the Tarantella* (Souvenir of Naples), created in 1832, *The Neapolitan Dancer with a Tambourine* was exhibited at the 1838 Salon. A pupil of Bosio, Francisque Duret, the son of a sculptor, won the Prix de Rome in 1823. The customs and traditions he encountered during his stay in Italy would remain a source of inspiration throughout his career.
