Rémy Mondain (1848–1908) was one of the co-founders of Angers’ first department store, the Palais des Marchands. In 1875, he went into partnership with Rémy Chanlouineau, a merchant from Saumur, and Louis Volerit, another Angers-based trader, to establish this department store, situated at 63 and 65 Rue Baudrière. The Palais des Marchands introduced to Angers the innovative practices of the Parisian department stores of the time, such as bringing together a variety of goods under one roof, fixed-price sales, seasonal sales and free entry for customers. The shop grew rapidly, with several significant extensions from 1876 onwards, and became a leading commercial establishment in the region
Albert Lebourg (1849–1928) was a French Impressionist painter, specialising in landscapes and urban scenes. Born in Montfort-sur-Risle, he initially studied architecture before turning to painting. Influenced by the Rouen school, he adopted a luminous palette and a fluid brushstroke, typical of Impressionism. He spent time in Algeria, where he taught drawing and discovered new sources of inspiration. On his return to France, he mainly painted views of the Seine and Paris. His style evolved towards a softer form of Impressionism, characterised by subtle harmonies of tone. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and at Impressionist exhibitions. His work is appreciated for its sensitivity to light and changing atmospheres. Although less famous than Monet or Sisley, he remains an important figure in Norman Impressionism. His works are now held in several French museums.
