Description
Edward Francis CUNNINGHAM (c. 1742?–1795), known as Francesco CALZA. Portrait of a young man, traditionally identified as Henry Fox (1705–1774). Pastel. Height: 59 cm – Width: 48.8 cm Provenance: Donated, together with the other two pastels, by Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, to Guillaume-Alexandre Pigault in 1784, in gratitude for the latter having secured for the Duke the continued free possession of the estate of Aubigny and permission to bear the title of Duke of Aubigny in France, despite the conflict between England and France arising from the War of Independence in the United States. Remained in the family. The subject appears to be under 30 years of age, and cannot therefore be Henry Fox (1705–1774), who was 63 in 1768. Nor does it appear to be Stephen Fox, 2nd Baron Holland (1745–1774) or his brother Charles James Fox (1749–1806), as the eye colour and shape of the face do not match. We would like to thank Neil Jeffares for identifying the artist, for his insights into the identity of the sitter, and for his assistance in drafting this entry. Lot from a voluntary sale.
