Description
Edward Francis CUNNINGHAM (c. 1742?–1795), known as Francesco CALZA. Portrait said to be of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond. Pastel signed on the right ‘Calze’ and dated 1768. Long inscription on the reverse identifying the sitter. Height: 60 cm – Width: 48.4 cm Provenance: Donated, together with the other two pastels, by Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, to Guillaume-Alexandre Pigault in 1784, in gratitude for the fact that the latter had secured for the Duke the continued free possession of the estate of Aubigny and permission to bear the title of Duke of Aubigny in France, despite the conflict between England and France arising from the American War of Independence. It has remained in the family ever since. The sitter cannot be identified as Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond, who died in 1750—18 years before the pastel was painted—and it would have been inconceivable to depict him without the Order of the Garter, which he had been awarded. The face bears a much closer resemblance to that of Henry Fox, Lord Holland, as seen in a pastel by Liotard from 1754, J.49.1658 (see comparison). We would like to thank Neil Jeffares for identifying the artist, for his comments on the identity of the sitter, and for his assistance in drafting this entry. Lot from a voluntary sale.
