Description
Victor HUGO (1802–1885), writer. Autograph letter signed ‘Victor Hugo’, dated Tuesday 16th (undated); addressee unknown*. Handwriting difficult to decipher. 1p, fine copy. Hugo gives his opinion on a piece written by a young author. ‘ I have just returned, Sir, from a twenty-four-hour excursion during which I received your kind invitation (…) You have embarked upon a drama, a great work – that is good. To attempt a great work is already more than to succeed in a small one, and I am almost convinced that I may go so far as to say that you have not only attempted it but succeeded. Please accept my sincere regret (?) and my warmest regards. Victor Hugo”. *A note in pencil reads ‘Guillaume’. Lot from a voluntary sale.
