Description
Simon BEAUVAIS (active in France between 1775 and 1781). Portrait of a woman holding a letter, with medallions depicting officers on her wrists. Original canvas, on the stretcher; an inscription on the reverse reads ‘?ais Px/1781’ Height: 81 cm – Width: 64 cm Appraisal carried out by the TURQUIN firm. We would like to thank the Conservatoire du Portrait du dix-huitième for its assistance in describing our painting. The letter held by the sitter and the bracelets adorned with miniature portraits are characteristic of the ‘Sensibility’ style of painting then in vogue on both sides of the Channel in the late 18th century. Simon Beauvais, an English painter and miniaturist based in London, depicts here a moment of social intimacy. Lot from a voluntary sale.
