He and his wife, Eliza Murray Black (probably the monogram EMB), had, amongst other children, a daughter named Mary Black, who married Schofield; she lost two children in infancy, James and Isadore (the latter’s name appearing on a piece of cutlery from the set). One of their daughters, whose first name is unknown, married Mr Evans, and the family still lived in Pennsylvania, where, on 10 December 1934, their daughter Ellen Virginia Evans married General John Farnsworth Smoller, who would go on to fight with his division in Europe in 1945. Their daughter is the mother of the current owner of this cutlery, which has been passed down through five generations of women in the family. The silversmith John C. FARR was active in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, between 1823 and 1858. He produced numerous items of cutlery in ‘coin silver’, that is to say, made from melted-down coins. Lot from a voluntary sale.
