From 1915 onwards, faced with the conflict becoming bogged down in the trenches, the French government and the Directorate of Fine Arts decided to organise touring theatre productions for the soldiers. The aim was to boost troop morale and assert France’s cultural superiority. The organisation was placed under the auspices of the Comédie-Française (directed by Émile Fabre), with these tours taking the greatest stars of the era (Sarah Bernhardt, Cécile Sorel, Béatrix Dussane) to within just a few kilometres of the front line.
