The aim was to boost troop morale and assert France’s cultural superiority. The organisation was placed under the auspices of the Comédie-Française (directed by Émile Fabre), with these tours taking the greatest stars of the era (Sarah Bernhardt, Cécile Sorel, Béatrix Dussane) to within just a few kilometres of the front line.
