Georges Clemenceau (1841–1929) and the Léon Daudet affair, 1925 Collection of correspondence and handwritten drafts 2 letters from Georges Clemenceau and 5 letters to Georges Clemenceau, 1925, addressed to René Benjamin 2 draft letters written by René Benjamin and addressed to Georges Clemenceau, 19 October and 7 December 1925, appealing to ‘the Tiger’ in the Daudet affair—the mysterious death of Philippe Daudet, son of Léon Daudet (a close friend of René Benjamin), who was found dead with a bullet wound to the head in a taxi in 1923. Whilst Léon Daudet denounced it as a political assassination orchestrated by the police, Clemenceau favoured the theory of an accident caused by an officer’s nervousness (‘the revolver fired too hastily’) due to fears of anarchist violence. This response greatly displeased René Benjamin, who wrote to him again on 7 December 1925 to express his disappointment.
