Lily Converse (1876–1961), painter and engraver Egypt – A collection of twelve lithographs Paris, 1930 12 lithographed plates 32.5 x 25 cm Limited first edition Each signed, numbered 12/50, and mounted on matboard (with foxing) List of plates White folder with flaps (small tears), titled and dated, portfolio with cord, 38 x 33 cm Long autograph dedication: To René Benjamin, who so skilfully captures the mysterious messages that hold us in silence, who so skilfully senses the grandeur of the divine universe and the depth of human sorrow and joy, in gratitude for a delightful hour spent with his beautiful book last night, April 1933" Extremely rare Lily Converse (Hiltrud Carla Sophie “Lily” Schierenberg) was born in Saint Petersburg and studied in Paris, where she was notably a pupil of André Lhote. She married the American banker John Williams Converse in 1909 and lived in the United States, where she taught and took part in numerous exhibitions. She died in Philadelphia. She exhibited this series of lithographs on Egypt at the Salon de l’Escalier on the Champs-Élysées in 1929, and previously at the Salon des Tuileries in Paris.
