Fernand Maillaud (1862–1948) Orientalist scene: a caravan Mixed media (ink, gouache, watercolour, chalk, marbling) On laid paper Signed lower left 23.5 x 16.5 cm From the 1930s onwards, Maillaud undertook several journeys to Morocco and Algeria. This drawing is a direct expression of his fascination with the Maghreb, yet rendered using a highly distinctive technique – a bold and modern style for its time. Working from a ‘random’ background of waves and patches in earth and water tones, imitating the effects of heat (mirage) and sand stirred up by the wind, the artist challenges himself to draw whilst adapting to these spontaneously formed marks. It is a form of dialogue between the randomness of the medium and the precision of his ink lines, enhanced with white gouache.
