Marshal Pétain’s visit to Paris, 26 April 1944 A collection of 40 press photographs documenting Marshal Pétain’s visit to Paris on 26 April 1944 Silver gelatin prints, 18 x 24 cm, from the press photo agencies Fulgur, Louis Silvestre and Fama, and a panoramic view (collage) (accdts), 48 x 12 cm; most with stamps on the reverse and some marked ‘Censored’ Marshal Pétain’s visit to Paris on 26 April 1944 was the first and only time he had officially travelled to Paris since the 1940 armistice and the establishment of the government in Vichy. Pétain attended a memorial service at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in memory of the civilian victims of the Allied bombings, where he was welcomed by Cardinal Suhard. At the Hôtel de Ville, he delivered a speech from the balcony to a crowd gathered in the square. It was there that he uttered his famous words: ‘I think of you often… This is not a visit to mark my entry into Paris; it is a brief reconnaissance visit.’ He then went to several hospitals to visit the victims of the air raids.
